If there's anything I hope you have learned from reading through my website, it's that I do things a bit differently from a lot of financial planners / advisors. The same holds true for this section of my website. What I know is important, but it's not as important as who I am and why I do what I do. For more on that, please keep reading.

Why I do what I do

I didn't actually set out to become a fee-only financial planner, but as I look back now it seems almost inevitable. The seeds were first sown in the part-time job I held as a University student – a teller at Canada Trust. I remember those clients who only had CPP & OAS income to live on. I also remember the people who were wealthy – business owners whose names you'd recognize. The difference between the two groups was enormous – I wanted to know how NOT to be part of the first group.

Shortly after moving to the Midland area, I had my first encounter with my future profession – a financial plan was completed for us. I don't remember much about the plan, but I took away a couple of key ideas that stick with me to this day. Mostly I remember thinking that this type of information could be used by just about everyone.

The transition to a fee-only financial planner happened over a couple of years. I became increasingly uncomfortable with how financial planning and investment advice were being promoted as being one and the same thing. I knew they weren't - my clients have questions and problems and needed plans that had nothing to do with buying an investment or insurance product. I wanted to be able to address those needs as the primary focus of my business. I was also uncomfortable that clients had no idea how much they were paying for the services they were receiving. And so here I am - 25+ years later, a fee-only financial planner. All I can say is that it works well for me and clients have been very receptive.

Who I am

I think the best way to give you an idea of who I am is to share the values that I have developed over the 25+ years of being in business.
